About the Play

The Lifespan of a Fact, by Jeremy Kareken, David Murrell, and Gordon Farrell, is based on the events surrounding John D’Agata’s essay “What Happens There” about the suicide of Las Vegas teenager Levi Presley.

In the play, Jim Fingal, a determined young fact checker, is tasked with checking a groundbreaking piece by the unorthodox author John D’Agata. Together with Jim’s demanding editor, Emily Penrose, they take on the high-stakes world of publishing and debate the blurred lines of what passes for truth in literary nonfiction.
