Love Letters Auditions

Auditions for the third production of Butler Little Theatre’s 84th Season, Love Letters, will be held Sunday, December 7, and Monday, December 8, at 6:00 pm.

There are roles available for one man and one woman, ages 50+. Readings will be from the script. The auditions will take place at the theatre, located at 1 Howard Street, in Butler. 

About the Play

Love Letters follows the lifelong correspondence between Melissa Gardner and Andrew Makepeace Ladd III, who began as childhood friends and continued to exchange letters for over 50 years. Their letters, ranging from birthday notes to personal reflections, reveal a deep connection and the complexities of their relationship, including their marriages, careers, and eventual realization of their true feelings. The play highlights the power of written communication to express emotions and the enduring nature of their bond.

About the Characters

Andrew Makepeace Ladd III and Melissa Gardner, are defined by their lifelong, complicated, and ultimately romantic friendship, expressed primarily through their letters. Andrew, from a stable, privileged background, is portrayed as a traditionalist, a good student, and a dedicated letter writer, often using his writing to express his deeper emotions. Melissa, also from wealth but with a more turbulent home life, is presented as a more rebellious and impulsive character, whose letters, though humorous and poignant, also reveal her emotional struggles and tendency towards self-destruction. Their relationship, spanning decades, explores themes of missed opportunities, the power of written words, and the enduring nature of their bond.
