Set in an English country house on the River Thames, Hay Fever blends over-the-top hijinks, slapstick, satire, and a comedy of manners to present a unique portrait of a wacky and endearing English family in the early 1920s. Each of the four members of the Bliss family has invited a guest to stay at the family estate for the weekend. This sets the stage for a series of raucous misunderstandings that only serve to underscore an unspoken but universal fact: There is no such thing as a normal family. The play explores the eccentric behavior of a family obsessed with acting and theatricality. It revolves around the Bliss family, known for their penchant for performing scenes and wearing theatrical costumes, much to the dismay of their friends and guests. The story centers on Judith Bliss, an aging celebrity actress, and her novelist husband David, who are both deeply immersed in their theatrical world. Their children also feel the effects of constant theatricality, leading to a humorous exploration of the blurry line between reality and performance.

Noël Coward’s silly, subversive 1925 comedy is the missing link between William Shakespeare and Edward Albee.
Splash Magazine
Noel Coward’s 100-year masterpiece has endured because, unfortunately, poor manners and inhospitality never go out of style. And they’re just as relevant today.
